About CANICATTIVA

Brand

CANICATTIVA is a sustainable fashion brand founded by Cristina Falsone in May 2023 in the Sicilian hinterland. Upcycling, tailoring techniques and Zero Waste ideology are the brand's leitmotif.

CANICATTIVA's vision is to research and recover within warehouses, in local markets and from her mother's Fabric Archive, to create one-of-a-kind pieces. The identity is particularly linked to the territorial specificity of the Mediterraean.

The design and transformation of materials belonging to different contexts is carried out through the techniques handed down from the family tailoring tradition.

The design of sartorial garments that come to life from old umbrellas abandoned on the beaches, is one of the first steps that sanctioned the birth of CANICATTIVA.

Designer

CANICATTIVA is founded by Cristina Falsone, an independent fashion designer and phD student at Luigi Vanvitelli University's deMIT, close to the Fashion Revolution movement.

Raised in a sartorial environment, she pursued fashion studies away from home and then returned and resume the old handicraft activity of his mother and aunts. A few months ago, in Sicily, she launched PARASULI: an upcycling project of outerwear made from abandoned beach umbrellas, recovered and transformed. For the project, she partnered with local entities involved in cleaning up the local coastline.

The designer's identity is particularly related to the upcycling of different materials. Brandelli, is a recycling project of second-hand jerseys, selected in the markets of Turin, also awarded as "Best Fashion Thesis 2019" at Iuav in Venice.

Brandelli, took part in ARTvism, the digital exhibition by Fashion Revolution Ita and Fondazione Pistoletto. In 2022, she interned at the Max Mara Archives during her master's degree in DTFC at the University of Bologna with F. FRI.

Parasuli Project

PARÁ= in Greek, BEYOND OR NEAR

SULI= in Sicilian, SUN

PARASULI: Beyond Near or Beside the Sun

PARASULI is a jacket upcycling project that focuses on reusing local Sicilian umbrellas, salvaged and transformed through tailoring techniques. These jackets are Zero Waste, waterproof, versatile and genderless! The pattern originated from a men's workwear jacket transformed on the needs of the umbrella design.

Upcycling for CANICATTIVA: #Research #Reactivate #Recompose #Giving value to what has lost it.

"The project started out as a challenge with myself: to return to the South and create from a collaboration, a Call to Action with a local association that cleans up the local coastline and the first research in Sicilian umbrella makers. I like to be able to make a contribution to protect the environment to reactivate a place: MY PLACE OF ORIGIN. During my studies I felt strongly the distance from the sea and with this collection I wanted to talk about it. I did not create figurines for this collection, I broke down the shapes and juxtaposed different weights based on the weight of the fabrics and the colors I chose. The beach umbrella is an element that I find interesting in design and composition, fun to break down!"

VISION

Environmental and Social Responsibility

CANICATTIVA is committed to being Active about overproduction of new garments and new fabrics for maximum respect for the environment. It uses only fabrics from archival inventories, fabrics from dead stock or discarded materials. The goal is to make a contribution to the reduction of pollution caused by fast fashion through slow processing techniques. CANICATTIVA works with local independent craftswomen to activate the sartorial tradition and collaborates with associations concerned with protecting the environment or with private individuals who are willing to collaborate with the search for materials. The creation of unique and numbered pieces, that together with the Italian sartorial tradition, become spokespeople for the process of change that is characterizing our world today

MANIFESTO

CANICATTIVA wants to express an activist desire towards social and environmental responsibility. It wants to be a spokesperson for change of environmental protection especially coastal protection, from respect for local culture, heritage, and craftsmanship, and finally women's empowerment where anyone who chooses to wear CANICATTIVA garments feels part of the process of change.
